Smile for (the Hacker Behind) the Camera!
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on August 27th, 2004
Hackers have finally caught up to current video technology. Sophos, a respected tech company with virus and antispam products, is reporting on a new virus, called Rbot-GR. In addition to allowing hackers to access passwords, files, software keys, and almost anything else stored on, or connected to, your machine, it also lets them see and Read the full article…
WestJet: The Return
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on August 19th, 2004
Flew back from Toronto late last night. Once again, Westjet staff were friendly and helpful, though not quite as funny. Late into the flight, I started eating the pizza that Cori and Phil had brought for me, and asked the flight attendant for some iced tea. When I finished the drink, I put the glass Read the full article…
No People in the Jet Engine!
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on August 10th, 2004
Flew from Calgary to Toronto today, with WestJet. The picture shown here is of a shiny new engine, aglow with warnings and icons. Apparently no people are allowed in the engine. Perhaps reasonable to a plane maintenance crew, but odd at 30,000 feet. In addition to cheap flights, WestJet is known for in-flight comedy schtick Read the full article…
Terrorist or Capitalist?

A friend of mine sent me a link to a parody of the American Department of Homeland Security’s emergency preparedness web site (thanks Gillian!). I’d seen the parody page before, but the second look motivated me to have a look at the real government site. The information is broken up into sections, like “Biological Threat”, Read the full article…
I Loves M’Gun

A female friend of mine got a shooting range day pass and fifty rounds of ammo for her birthday. I love that. Welcome to Alberta. Although, to be fair, in most of Alberta, the shooting range would be the back forty, and you wouldn’t need a special occasion to pop a cap or two, regardless Read the full article…
Caipriosca and The Frozen Fly
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on July 26th, 2004
Yesterday some friends came by for dinner and a belated birthday celebration. They introduced me to a new drink called a “caipriosca” (cai-pree-OS-ka) that is better than Kool-Aid: Cut 1 small lime into eight lengthwise slices, removing the white stuff in the middle. Place lime slices (all of them) in large tumbler, and mash to Read the full article…
How to Get Away From the Cops: "Run Like Crazy."

You’d think the cops have the whole custody thing worked out by now.
Board out of My Mind

Last weekend Phil and I built a fence. I will eventually get around to chronicling the entire experience, complete with animated photos of its progress, but for now, it’s enough to say that I enjoyed it, learned a ton, and hope I never have to do it again.
So much for the "sense" part

Always looking to find a way to make my site self-sufficient, I decided to try out Google’s Adsense program on the site for a while. What it does is let me host advertising from Google with links that match the content of the page. Pretty brilliant: Google knows what kind of search terms match my Read the full article…
Make Me a Morning Person
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on June 5th, 2004
I hate the morning. It’s slow, and cold, and out of focus. The AM is needy, and persistent, and full of aches. What’s good about the morning that you can’t get in the afternoon or evening? Well, after a long night of work, that turned into a morning of work, I climbed up from my Read the full article…
