Where Getting Up Early Got Me
Posted by yoursinwriting in Everything Else on May 25th, 2006
Getting up earlier allows me to take the bus to work: I can read my book, listen to music, and bypass traffic jams. Despite the fact that I make two connections from my house to the school, my travel time is only about 5 minutes longer than when I drove. Plus, I save a couple hundred dollars on my insurance by taking off the work-use rider, and I’m unaffected by the spiralling price of oil. Before I went to public transit, I considered these benefits; while the idea made me happy, the reality has contributed to my contentment more than I could have anticipated.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 21)

Two beneficial side effects have come out of this attempt:
- My base wake time has moved back by an hour, and I comfortably (and often automatically) get out of bed by 6am.
- I have an entirely new intimacy with my alarm clock. I now understand how the Nap function and the Snooze timer work. And oh how I use them.

I was sure that going back to work would give me the nudge I needed. Nah. In fact, I almost missed my 7am bus.

It was Terence of Andria who wisely prescribed, “Moderation in all things.” About two centuries later, Thomas Becon piped up, “Oh yeah? Including moderation!” Some sense of comic timing.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 10)

My body finally stepped in. Woke up this morning at 5am feeling not tired, but actually ill. Angry, tickling roots of a migraine tentacling out from my basal ganglia. Woof. Back to bed, after lots of liquids and ibuprofen. Thankfully, it could have been much, much worse. I regained consciousness a few times during the day, feeling woozy and rock-crusher-headed, focusing long enough to suck back more water and drugs. By the time I was feeling like a real person, it was almost 4pm, and I hadn’t called my lady friend regarding date numero deux.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 9)

So it’s 2:37am and I’m heading to bed, again thinking I’ll be up at 5am. I think this is going to be really challenging until something (like, say, my job) forces me to get up in the morning. Because currently, I’m enjoying being up late way too much.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 8)

Well, the wheels have come fully off, it would seem. I was out late again last night (bedtime after 2am), and couldn’t stay up after turning of my alarm. Worse, when I did wake up (7am), I decided to just have a quick nap and then start the day. But I accidentally hit the “alarm 2” button instead of the “nap” button; so I set an alarm for 6:30am (already past), and woke up at 11:30am. Back to my normal routine.

I’m trying to keep this in perspective. After all, I’m on holidays here, and only short months ago that would have meant my average wake time would be noon.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 6)

Strange news to report today. I was indeed up at 5am, but the problem was that I never actually went to bed. So I can’t fairly claim to have gotten up, to have risen early.
The Making of a Morning Person (Day 5)

This morning, I popped out of bed when the alarm went off (I’m not prewaking yet or anything), but instead of wandering out into the hall and doing my normal thing, I got back into bed and stared at the ceiling. I recognized that this was partially consideration for the fact that my friend wasn’t going to wake up for at least another 2 hours, but mostly it was an excuse to stay in the warm bed.
